Conflict analysis and assessment

Conflict analysis and assessment is similar to a contextual analysis or a situation analysis. The focus is very much on the conflict or fragility of the state or region in which a development intervention is taking place or proposed. A conflict assessment is sometimes referred to as a Strategic Conflict Assessment or as a Peace and Conflict Impact Assessment. This considers the root (structural) and immediate (proximite) causes of conflict, trends and triggers for violent conflict to occur or continue, and identifies the stakeholders including victims and spoilers (or perpetrators) measures to be undertaken to resolve conflict and sustain peace. A review of conflict invariably includes an assessment of the conflict situation although these studies are more concerned with assessing how development interventions have addressed conflict.

Triple Line has conducted reviews of conflict-related programmes including reviews of peace building funds and conflict prevention work. Triple Line staff have past experience in providing conflict analyses and assessments for policy-makers and civil society organisations in the past including conflict assessments on Burundi to inform the review and re-design of a donor peace building programme, on the Democratic Republic of Congo to brief senior government officials and situation analyses on Rwanda and Sierra Leone as part of an impact assessment of civil society post-conflict programming.

Recent contracts include a review of the Africa Conflict Prevention Programme for DFID, FCO and the MOD, and a desk-based review of Global Witness’ work in the Democratic Republic of Congo (for Sida).
