Agriculture and renewable natural resources are fundamental to reducing poverty and hunger. Some 2.5 billion people in developing countries depend on agriculture for their livelihoods. Agriculture and broader natural resource use are the economic core of many poor countries and an important source of wider economic growth. Recent commodity price changes and climatic shifts have highlighted the importance of sustainable development of agriculture and the wider rural economy. This has generated a renewed interest in these areas by donors, investors and civil society.
