Health, Nutrition And Water, Sanitation & Hygiene (WASH)

Health, Nutrition and WASH are major determinants of the quality of life. The symbolic relationship between each other needs no elaboration; healthy populations enjoy longer and more productive lives, and a reduced risk for diseases, resulting in stronger, more financially secure families, communities, and economies. In many developing countries, access to balanced diet, nutrition and basic sanitation is a challenge for the poor and disadvantaged, which highlights the need for targeted welfare measures and delivery solutions. With the ultimate goal of making sustainable improvements to this sector, we work with national and local governments, NGOs, and the private sector to integrate health reforms, focusing on building in-country leadership capacity, with interventions for ensuring sustainable healthcare.

We realise that an investment in this sector, focusing on the underprivileged and vulnerable, could have large impact on the well-being of the nation states themselves. It is not coincidental that these were included in the erstwhile Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) and are now contained within Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).

To maximise the impact of health, nutrition and WASH, we have an integrated, multi-sectoral approach to strengthening health systems, including policy design, planning, service delivery, hospital management, Behaviour Change Communication (BCC), health financing and health & nutrition services improvement.

Projects

  • USAID: Health Systems Strengthening, Quality Improvement, and RMNCH+A Scale-Up - Programme Area #5: Scaling Up Interventions in Reproductive, Maternal, Neonatal, Child and Adolescent Health (Delhi, Haryana, Himachal Pradesh, Jharkhand, Punjab and Uttarakhand), India (2014-2018)

    RMNCH+A programme is designed to contribute to USAID's goal of reducing morbidity and mortality among women and children, especially in 30 high priority districts (HPDs) in 6 states of India (Jharkhand, Uttarakhand, Punjab, Haryana, Himachal Pradesh and Delhi), in support of Government of India's efforts towards Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) 4 and 5. We are providing techno-managerial support at national, state and district level to develop capacity of implementation agencies to enable them to identify and scale up effective RMNCH+A interventions in respective areas. Specifically, the overall purpose of the project is to increase the off-take of RMNCH+A services in the 30 HPDs across target states through (i) increased availability, accessibility and demand for RMNCH+A services; (ii) ensuring convenience, quality & affordability of services; (iii) targeting the vulnerable population in HPDs; (iv) promoting innovations and pilots for radical improvements; and (v) building capacity of state and district administration to continuously improve their health systems.

  • DFID: Design and Implementation of Bihar Health Sector Reform Strategy – Sector Wide Approach to Strengthen Health (SWASTH), in Bihar, India (2009-2016)

    The objective of SWASTH is to design and implement cutting-edge reforms for the health, nutrition and WASH sector in Bihar, to bring about lasting changes in the health and nutritional status of the people, particularly the poorest and socio-economically marginalised. The project includes preparation of the respective sector plans for the Government of Bihar and providing implementation support, particularly the reform programme. We, through our Technical Assistance Support Team (TAST),are working with the departments of Health, Social Welfare and Public Health Engineering to assist the Government of Bihar in providing preventive and curative health services to the people, and improving its procurement systems and implementation arrangements. The underlying key objective is to build skills and capacity of these departments so that they are able to sustain the efforts beyond the life of SWASTH.

  • DFID: Technical and Management Support Team (TMST) for Design and Implementation of Odisha Health Sector and Nutrition Support Programme (OHSNP), India (Phase I: 2008–2012; Phase II: 2012-2016)

    Supported by DFID, United Kingdom, OHSNP aims to strengthen delivery of primary health, nutrition and WASH services in the poor, remote and rural districts of Odisha, by developing and implementing specific strategies to promote responsive and accountable service delivery. We are working with Government of Odisha for identifying technical assistance needs; supporting strategy development and planning at all levels; ensuring adequate capacity building of government departments for better policy and planning; institutional reforms; human resource management and improved monitoring; and, procurement and financial management systems. In addition, we are supporting convergence between the Government of Odisha's Department of Health and Family Welfare, Department of Women and Child Development and Rural Development Department including coordination between development partners.

  • ADB: Monitoring and Evaluation of Nutrition Improvement through Community Empowerment (NICE), Indonesia (2010-2012)

    Asian Development Bank (ADB) funded NICE programme was designed to support the Government of Indonesia in reducing and preventing malnutrition, and to tackle issues that had led to the decline in the overall nutrition status and weakening of nutrition programs and their service delivery. The project aimed to develop monitoring and evaluation (M&E) systems to increase results orientation of the NICE programme by monitoring progress against project targets in the 1,800 community nutrition packages (CNPs) in 24 cities and districts, and to strengthen local planning and budgeting for nutrition programs. IPE Global designed and implemented the M&E systems for the central project monitoring unit (CPMU), provincial project coordination units (PPCUs), and district project implementation units (DPIUs). The services included development of performance indicators; creation of database structures; staff training on M&E; financial management and; auditing, reporting, and institutionalisation of an evidence-based monitoring system through workshops, training and advocacy with relevant stakeholders.
